Two caring Quincy, Illinois men
went over and beyond their normal daily
living routine to help the Tri-State
Veterans get to go to the WWII War
Memorial at Washington, DC. Karl Peters
employed in the Maintenance Dept
of The Adams County Courthouse and Randy
Austin employed by the City of
Quincy Central Services were discussing the
up-coming Soap Box Derby
that was to be held on Saturday, June 12,
2010. Peters had built five of
the Soap Box Derby cars. Both men have been
long time members of the
Machinists Lodge #822 and have helped in
Community Services in the past.
They had heard that some people were going
to race each other in the
adult Soap Box Derby cars for charity. They
challenged each other to
collect funds to help the Honor Flight
mission and raced in the Derby.
They declined to talk about who won the
race. In one week they were very
proud to have raised $1248.00 . Peters did
this in honor of his son
Vince who was in the Marines and in memory of his
Father-in-Law Russell
Schutte, WWII veteran and a retiree from the
Carpenters union Local
#189. Austin did this in honor of his
Father-in-Law Darrell Williams who
was in the Air Force and his Grand-Father G. F.
Wesley Craylor who was
in the Army and was a prisoner of war.
This money was presented to Matt Courtney who is
one of fourteen members
on a committee for the Honor Flight mission and
was very pleased to
receive this thoughtful gift of $1248.00. This
donation would help to
send four Tri-State Veterans to Washington, D.C.
to see the WWII War
memorial. Courtney is a Marine Veteran and works
at the Airport Homeland
Security. He stated there are sixty-five Tri-State
Veterans, that
includes one lady Veteran. Courtney says that they are
planning two more
flights this year for the Tri-State Veterans.
Congratulating Peters, Austin and Courtney are
